I’m the Industry Fellow (advertising) at RMIT University. I’m an art director by trade and my role as a lecturer and researcher is to teach advertising students a variety of subjects that are closely linked to industry.
I’m sure some of my former students who might read this will have heard this from me before: always back yourself. Listen carefully. Have a go at things and ask for help when you get stuck. You aren’t supposed to be perfect when you are a junior. We are all still learning. Be human and be a little old-fashioned in the way that you interact with the industry. I’m sure Sally will agree with me on this one.
'Journey on Wadawurrung Country'
Journey on Wadawurrung Country is a cultural exploration of our local indigenous people and their stories through artistic practice. Together in close consultation with Corrina Eccles (Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and cultural manager), Ferne Millen (art director/photographer) and Vicki Hallett (musician, sound artist, field recordist) will collaborate to capture the stories of the traditional custodians of Wadawurrung land.
The multidisciplinary exhibition featuring installations includes sound, visual arts and lighting in the Ryrie Street entrance-foyer of the Geelong Arts Centre. Millen’s fine art prints of portraits of Wadawurrung elders and landscapes of this country will be displayed and interwoven with Vicki Hallett’s sound recordings and interviews, thus activating the Foyer space into a full, sensory and immersive cultural learning experience for the public. This pilot project will capture a cross-section of portraits, sounds and stories from identified Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and their lands. “It is time for Wadawurrung people to be acknowledged.” - Corrina Eccles

15 Days. “In December 2020 my family and I moved interstate to be close to my father-in-law who was placed in palliative care. Due to strict measures in Western Australia, in place to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, we were ordered to self-quarantine for 15 days on arrival. I decided to document this time, mostly by taking portraits of my 4-year-old daughter Mila and as my beautiful wife Emma was nursing our 6-month-old son, I often found myself pointing my lens at them as well. As stressful as being in quarantine is on mental health, this was a time of connection, discovery, reflection, growth and love. If
anything, I am glad to have recorded this period in our lives as an unforgettable time in history.” I am here now and ready to work, so if anyone needs a pro photographer with an east coast twist,
get in touch!

Toni Newman | Producer & Stylist
Costume Designer and Art Director on
‘My Friend Anxiety’Toni Newman from Toni + Co recently completed a gig as the Costume Designer and Art Director on the pilot of a wonderful project called ‘My Friend Anxiety’; a very clever and funny comedy filmed down in Geelong that was written & directed by Ryan Chamley. Toni told us …“I started working up costume and art department mood boards during COVID lockdown and rolled with all of the challenges around that including cast changes due to border restrictions, ‘remote fittings’, not being able to visit locations, tight budgets and instigating new ways of working
to be ‘Covid Safe’ once we got to set. Everything takes twice as long when you can’t get out and about to see/touch/feel stuff but once Victoria was released in late October it was SO ON!! I had an absolute ball on set too; being able to create and work across both the costume and art departments to see the big picture was fabulous – given the size of the shoot, it was possible – challenging and a lot of hard work – but doable and I had a fantastic team of wonderful women assisting me on set across both departments. I loved being part of the Team I’m in awe of how each and every crew member and
actor brought their very best each day, it was an experience I’ll never forget and look forward to doing more in the future!”

Ultimately, my work satisfaction is rooted in exceeding expectations by developing creative solutions and seeing work come to life as clients revel in the final product. I look forward to discussing how I can assist with your next project!
Testimonial from Alex Virr
Working with Sally throughout this period was amazing. She was always responsive and listened to my concerns and we worked together to figure out what the next best steps were. Being forced to work remotely with clients and agencies alike that you've never met before is unquestionably challenging but I feel like Sally knew exactly who to match me with both in terms of personality and skillset.
As a result of Sally's intuition and broad network, the last six months have been busy and I've found myself working on projects that are both challenging and rewarding.
