July 2019 Newsletter
No Images? Click here Hi there, It's already July, how did that happen? One more financial year under the belt. It's a good time of year to sit down with a coffee and see how we can shake things up for the coming 12 months. Maybe one of those things is to branch out and see what amazing creatives you could work with on projects? "What a great idea Sally," I hear you saying. Why thank you. So, grab yourself that coffee and take ten minutes to sit and have a look at some of the creatives we have on The Brownbill Effect Creative Directory. You can get in touch with them directly, and browse the whole directory for FREE. Have fun! Sally Walkley Award Winning PhotojournalistA Walkley Award winning photojournalist and NIKON Ambassador, David Dare Parker has photographed for many publications, including LeMonde, Australian Geographic, The Bulletin, The New York Times and Time Magazine. He is featured in the books ‘Contact’ – Australian War Photographers, Curiosity - Stories of those who report during wartime and WAR: Degree South. Tailor Tailor | RetoucherLayers, on Layers, on Layers"A visually arresting campaign for Bayer and their pastoral pest control product Poncho. Devised for the super bug - Argentine Stem Weevil, which wipes out acres of productive farming grass, although its true size is only 2mm in length. Using background plates shot we went ahead and brought these tiny critters to life in CG giving each one individual characteristics as they move across the paddock." James Thorn | PhotographerPhotographing an Icon"Earlier in the year, I had the opportunity to meet and photograph Peter Hitchener OAM. Peter is someone I’ve wanted to photograph for a while, so I was thrilled when he said yes to my request. The highlight of the portrait session was when Peter shared his view of the importance of maintaining a positive outlook on life. As a veteran newsreader, Peter has seen and heard it all, yet is well known for his infectious positivity and the ability to bring a smile to everyone’s face. He told stories of singing and dancing with his colleagues in the studio before the evening report and being constantly involved in many facets of the community. In a world where it’s easy for everything to seem so doom and gloom, it was a delight to have this opportunity to meet and be inspired by Peter." Toni Newman | Producer & StylistRostered OnEarlier this year one of our members, Toni Newman — Producer, Stylist extraordinaire and founder of Toni + Co Productions and The Styling Business — took some time off from both of her businesses to work as the Costume Designer on a television comedy show, Rostered On. Initially pulled in to work in both the Art and Costume departments, it soon became apparent that the role of Costume Designer needed her entire focus. But not before she was able to introduce the Art Department to some of her trusted suppliers. One of which was another TBE member, Precision Group, who helped out with all of the store printing requirements, and the results look fantastic. Her role as the ‘Costume Designer’ saw her create, source, find, buy, style and keep track of nearly 100 full head-to-toe costumes, plus dress extras! Toni tells us working as the Costume Designer was "…huge, sometimes overwhelming, but very awesome and amazing. The cast and crew were wonderful and gave it their very best and I’m very proud of what was achieved and grateful for the opportunity.” Would she do it again? “Absolutely! I love the process of interpreting words on a page to create an outfit/look. Taking ideas from the Director's brain — and working with the actor to come up with a specific look and feel right for that character — all the while keeping within a strict budget.” Nick Edlin | Graphic DesignerSalty Beasts"We worked with the lovely people at Saltybeasts to design a visual identity, e-commerce website and packaging for their new sustainable activewear brand for kids. The brief was to create an identity that was fresh and modern, that would appeal to young children and their parents looking for quality, durable swim and activewear but also to older kids who want something fashionable that has real sustainability credentials." Frances Andrijich | PhotographerNew York TimesWe can now announce that our fantastic WA photographer, Frances Andrijich, shot the amazing Sam Vinciullo for The New York Times to accompany the article by Eric Asimov. A purist winemaker, Sam's hand plunges without a t-shirt so he can go deep into the tubs without clothing coming into contact with the must. “I don’t bother getting a glass to taste the
ferments when plunging as I go by smell and feel more so and only need a few drops off the arm.” “Mr. Vinciullo refuses to sell wine to people who he believes do not understand what he is trying to do.” Alex Wallace | PhotographerBarefoot & ThompsonShot for Barfoot & Thompson, Auckland's biggest ( and best! ) real estate agency. Alex Wallace spent 3 months shooting every single one of their 73 branches and associated suburbs and landmarks. A mammoth task but I can now say I have visited just about every nook and cranny in this vast, sprawling city. Her work has been described as feminine, honest, powerful and strong—all while being quite simplistic, drawing viewers attention to the details of her images. Growing up in remote coastal towns on Australia's western coast, Stef King has fond memories of wide open lands, golden sun rays and hot white sands leading her to crystal clear salty waters. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, she would spend hours creating stories in her head of strong heroines saving the day and following their dreams. With a career spanning over 15 years, Stef's portfolio contains work published globally. Nigel Karikari | Film & Video Producer"I'm the type of filmmaker happiest when I'm mixing it up, whether it's writing a unique creative idea for a brief, directing talent, editing or shooting. Originally from London, I initially trained as an architect before striking out to pursue my real passion, filmmaking. Along the way, I’ve worked at major post houses and a couple of leading production companies. I’ve cut over a thousand TVC’s in Australia and the U.K, directed an award-winning short film, a few TVC’s and a TV stand up comedy series. I’ve also edited and co-produced a feature-length documentary and won a couple of Gold awards for an online video campaign I wrote, directed and edited. I’m also in the Guinness Book of Records, but that’s another story. I love being able to combine all my skills to create films that resonate beyond being just communication tools. Companies, products, even people, they’re all fascinating stories waiting to be told, and that’s what I’m passionate about exploring. Stories." Alex McConnell | Photography Assistant"I am a photographer and assistant based in Sydney, NSW. Having recently graduated from Billy Blue College of Design with highly commended work in Billy Blue College of Design’s street photography competition, I am dedicated to continuing my growth and development alongside professional photographers in a range of fields. Beginning my photography career, like many others, in the field of travel photography, I continued to challenge my skills, particularly in a studio environment with a focus on product, advertising and lifestyle photography whilst also exploring sports photography as a sideline photographer at the 2018 NRL Grand Final and experiencing the role of a photography assistant to Sydney photographer, Bora You. I am hard working, eager to continue learning on the job and flexible with time and locations in both Sydney and Melbourne."
