No images? Click here Hi there, As Melbourne bursts into much-awaited freedom, a real positivity seems to be present. We can now join the rest of Australia and New Zealand in celebrating such freedom, and viewing our creatives' work along with meeting many new members who have joined us this last month! In addition, hearing from the very talented Sherri McIver and getting her take on the creative industry is a must-read. Hope to see you soon ... because we can! Sal and Felix Writer & Thinker “I fell into advertising by way of journalism. It was a very fortunate stumble. I was living beyond my means in Perth when there was a 7.30 am knock on my front door. A man from the ANZ Bank stood outside in the rain. ‘Can I see your Bankcard’? he enquired. For some reason, I handed it to him. He whipped out some scissors, held the card up in front of my face and cut it in half. I suppose you could say it was a wake-up call.” Can I Pat that Dog? Children's StorybookFostering dogs over the past 3 years, has given Alice Shaw the opportunity to meet and interact with so many different canine personalities. And, contrary to popular belief, not all dogs are the same. Not all dogs like pats and not all dogs like play. Some are friendly and some aren’t. They tell us all this very clearly, but we don’t always know how to listen. Alice wanted to give dogs a bigger voice. That is when Can I pat that dog? was born. Educating children on the best ways to interact with dogs is vital to ensuring the safety of both child and dog. Can I pat that dog? Takes the reader through a series of interactions and scenarios to help children understand elements of dog behaviour and body language and the best ways to interact with unfamiliar dogs. Aiming to be both educational and entertaining, this digitally illustrated picture book takes the form of a social story, so it is also helpful for children with autism or developmental delay. A great book for everyone who loves dogs and those who don’t… yet. Never Too Small WebseriesIn what’s been one of the hardest years in the video production game, New Mac Video Agency turned its COVID-19 lemons into lemonade with its YouTube series Never Too Small. "This is a quick yarn that can be filed next to 'Pandemic Pivots', or 'I’ve always wanted to start a YouTube channel about...'. In the words of New Mac editor and Never Too Small creator Colin Chee, Never Too Small started when he wanted to get free advice from architects about how he could improve his small apartments. Colin had also identified an unmet need out there on YouTube which we started answering with our semi-regular profiles of novel small format design/architecture projects. When the pandemic hit, our agency bookings pretty much went to zero, but we were able to transfer the team’s focus to Never Too Small, which has turned into hitting a big milestone of 1.4 million subscribers, completing a 12 x 30 minute TV series and a coffee table book which is due to hit stores in August 2021. If we’ve learnt anything, it’s that studio and passion projects can pay off, and it’s a reminder for us to get started on our next one!" Check out Never Too Small on YouTube here. Helcro Solar BrandingHelcro Solar is a Victorian owned and operated solar company that asked Alex Virr to brand their business. "Solar is a burgeoning space in Australia with huge potential for both residential and commercial customers. After doing some research I found that the competition in this space was leading with confusing promotions and technical detail that most newcomers to the subject don't understand. I resolved their branding and tagline with simplicity and bright colours to convey a sense of trust and integrity to their offering." My area of expertise is mainly in children’s clothing. Back in 2000, I started a successful freelance business and I was commissioned by some of Australia’s major retailers such as Myer and Target, among others. I also have run industry training sessions for Melbourne fashion wholesalers, The PAZ Group being a longstanding client of mine. I have also had the great fortune to have spent many years as a part-time teacher at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Boxhill TAFE, Kangan TAFE and Melbourne School of Fashion teaching students how to draw with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. My teaching and coaching style and approach are completely informed by my real-life industry experience. I believe that learning should be uncomplicated and clear. This is evident in the textbook I co-wrote with my friend and fellow teacher, Frances Vereker, “A Fashion Designer’s Handbook for Adobe Illustrator”. My passion for teaching and learning lead me to complete a Masters of Arts by research (RMIT, Melbourne) where I examined industry needs and education outcomes. The results of my research highlighted the need we all have for lifelong learning.
